The FIFA World Cup 2026 is finally here, and with six matches scheduled in Toronto between June 12 and July 2, Ontario motor coach operators will play a critical role in moving fans, teams, sponsors, media, and visitors throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
While the tournament presents significant business opportunities, it will also create unprecedented transportation challenges. Operators serving Toronto and cross-border markets should be preparing now to ensure safe and efficient trips.
Expect Significant Traffic and Access Restrictions
The City of Toronto has released a comprehensive mobility plan for the tournament that includes road closures, restricted vehicle access zones, parking limitations, and traffic management measures surrounding Exhibition Place, Liberty Village, Fort York, the waterfront, and Toronto Stadium (BMO Field). Match days are expected to attract more than 45,000 spectators per game, while the FIFA Fan Festival at Fort York could draw up to 20,000 additional visitors on event days.
Operators should anticipate longer travel times, congestion throughout the downtown core, and changing traffic patterns. Traditional routing plans to the stadium will no longer be viable during tournament periods.
Review and Update Routing Plans
It will be vital to review all routes serving host cities and identify alternate pathways in advance. Drivers should be briefed on road closures, restricted access areas, staging locations, and law enforcement directives before every trip.
Dispatch teams may need to monitor municipal traffic advisories and maintain direct communication with drivers throughout the day should there be unexpected changes. Contingency planning will be essential, particularly for charter groups operating on tight schedules.
Canada and USA Border Operations
The Ontario Motor Coach Association (OMCA) and Motor Coach Canada (MCC) have worked closely with both the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection through dedicated World Cup 2026 task forces to improve cross-border processing for motor coach operations.
With significant cross-border travel expected during the 2026 World Cup, border agencies are working to better allocate resources based on known travel volumes using advance passenger information. For details on how to submit your arrival information, click here.

If your clients are considered official participants, such as teams, VIPs, sponsors, media, officials, or friends and family of the teams, you will receive an official FIFA Vehicle Access Parking Permit (VAPP) from the Venue Transport Department within FIFA Toronto, which will allow access through road closures and provide an allocated parking spot. If you receive an approved VAPP, there is a QR code on the back of the permit. It shows a static map of where their parking is located at the stadium and also includes a customized Google Maps link. When you click “Go/Directions,” it will guide you from your live location, ensuring you pass through the required checkpoints and reach the allocated secure parking area.
Without a VAPP, travel through the road closures will not be permitted. Without a permit, you should follow the regular City of Toronto coach parking regulations for downtown events. All motor coach groups should be dropped off as close as possible, and passengers must walk or take public transit to the stadium.
In addition, if you receive a VAPP for your vehicle, you must ensure that the assigned driver is accredited. All drivers participating in the Accord Pitch contracts have completed the accreditation process, including background checks and the submission of passport information, contact details, and other required documentation. VAPPs will not be issued to non-accredited drivers.
Strengthen Security Awareness
Operators can help increase security awareness and support suspicious activity reporting by:
- Review procedures for drivers to report suspicious activity.
- Ensure drivers understand emergency communication protocols.
- Verify contact information for company security personnel and local emergency services.
- Increase awareness to help identify human trafficking activities.
- Reinforce passenger screening and boarding procedures where appropriate.
A well-informed driver remains one of the industry’s most valuable security assets.
Communicate with Customers Early and Often
Passenger expectations will need to be managed carefully during the tournament. Delays, detours, restricted drop-off zones, and increased security screening will all impact travel times. Clear communication will reduce confusion and improve the overall customer experience.
Plan for Limited Stadium Access
Toronto’s mobility plan prioritizes a “transit-first” approach to manage the hundreds of thousands of spectators expected for the tournament. With no general public parking or bus staging zones available at Toronto Stadium or the FIFA Fan Festival (Fort York/The Bentway), officials are relying heavily on the use of public transit or walking for the last mile. Public parking around Toronto Stadium, Exhibition Place, Liberty Village, and Fort York will be heavily restricted during tournament operations. Vehicle access near the stadium will be tightly controlled, and many passengers may need to complete portions of their journey on foot.
Operators should identify coach parking, staging, and passenger drop-off procedures before match days and communicate these arrangements to passengers well in advance.

Final Thoughts
Ontario’s motor coach industry has a long history of delivering safe and reliable transportation for major events. By planning ahead, training staff, monitoring evolving conditions, and communicating effectively with customers, OMCA members can help ensure visitors experience the very best of Toronto, Ontario, and Canada during this historic tournament. The opportunities are significant but so are the operational demands.
As always, the OMCA team is available to help support our members.
Sincerely,
Vince Accardi
President, OMCA
